Just arrived in Helmand Province
Dust as far as eyes can see
No place for an army novice
To get a dose of reality

My role in today’s patrol
Is to stay alive amongst this debris
Keep a watch out for hidden danger
Or lose myself to an IED

We travel to the local town
To train the national army for free
I have to say it makes me nervous
As some have turned their guns on me

This horror show staring back at me

The highest mountain that you’ll ever climb
Is learning to love behind enemy lines

Today the plane touched down to earth
In the land of my place of birth

The Union Standard draped in pleats
