The War Within Part One: A Mother’s Kiss Young days, perfect days full of dreams Carefree, invincible I seemed But, just like the seasons, things change Like photographs memories would fade The poster said “Your Country Needs You” The Earl of Derby said my time was due Recruited to the 7th Army Corps Taking only a mother’s kiss to war Part Two: The Whole Nine Yards (Instrumental) Part Three: Field of Souls Through the haze there comes a reckoning All that I knew has gone Nothing left, and nothing left to die for Friendships barely forged, a field of souls Just like mine lay dying I dream of home, mother and comfort Take me in your arms Part Four: The Homecoming Mother: Please come home, keep safe and warm and please come home Carry your light; carry your soul; I hear you calling I hope and pray, that I’ll see you again some day Carry your light; carry your soul; I feel you falling Son: I’m coming home, the lucky one, I’m coming home Though I may not be the same as when we said goodbye Mother & Son: To carry on I’m not sure how to carry on (You make sure that you carry on) Erase the hell to find the one that you (I) kissed goodbye. Son: I’m not here anymore Lost in the darkness I’m not here anymore Black heart and starless I’m not here anymore Mother: (Carry your light; carry your soul) Lost in the darkness I’m not here anymore Mother: (Carry your light; carry your soul) Black heart and starless Part Five: The Forgotten Country I feel that I’ve come home To be in a foreign place This forgotten country As clear as a stranger’s face Allowed to live but little else A prisoner of my choices In sleep I see the field of souls Haunted by calling voices Bayonettes!........Ready!.......Advance! Fall back..... I know the time has come To find an inner peace To join the fallen ones And then my hell will cease Part Six: The War is Never Won Only those who have never fought Debate who’s won and lost There’s no winner from the war waged within Only a dreadful cost Tell your children "Don’t forget That the war is never won" The battle comes home and it takes its deadly hold In each mother’s darling son Mother: Carry your light; carry your soul I can hear you calling Carry your light; carry your soul I can feel you falling

The Greater Good What a price To make the ultimate sacrifice You know I fear the worst That I won’t make my twenty-first The call has come And when all has been said and done In my soul and in my heart I know that I will play my part They say "You know it’s for the greater good" Let’s put our faith in a better world and join the brotherhood We’ll win if we follow all the rules We’ll never know our lives are in the hands of fools You know it’s for the greater good, they say It’s for the greater good The Ministry assures A decisive win is to be secured In weeks they said But in days many of our kin lay dead They say "You know it’s for the greater good" But a helmet and a gun remain where your son once stood They don’t see all the destruction and despair But there again it’s hard to see that from an office chair You know it’s for the greater good, they say It’s for the greater good They say "You know it’s for the greater good" But no sense prevailed when offensives failed, obscured by falsehood You know it’s for the effort of the war We must defeat or at least unseat a regime we can’t ignore Hey you, it’s for the greater good So we’re all in this together or have I misunderstood? And you'll pay respect and praise the mettle Of those who died for nothing so you can wear your medal You know, it’s for the greater good, they say It’s for the greater good

Heroes 04:51
Heroes Spray lands on the windowpane as the ships slip Portsmouth’s shore On this grey 1980s day brave men, fathers go to war Keep them safe Keep them warm Out of danger’s grasp But like those who have gone before they saw many trials All because they swore an oath to defend British Isles Keep them safe Keep them warm Show them the danger’s past There are those who'll stand up tall and brave Acting for us all And so it seems the very least that we can do Is to have respect and catch them when they fall Help the heroes Give them back their pride Heal their scars, all the things not on show And give them time for what they’ve been through A little thanks, a little kindness and care Give hope for tomorrow Hear them Hear them calling Hear them calling you, hear them Hear them (Help them see) Hear them calling (Help them feel again) Hear them calling you, hear them (That there’s always a brighter future) Hear them (Help them overcome) Hear them calling (Help them sail toward) Hear them calling you (Clear horizons now) Heroes one and heroes all, they fell So lest we forget

It's A Crude Business We’d like to dismiss it as fantasy But greed for oil drives our policy To lubricate the cogs of our industry We’ll ignore the merits of morality The foreign office is instructed to care There’ll be no sanctions just provided they share And keep the cost of production low So our economy continues to grow Shhhh…It’s a crude, crude business Shhhh…It’s a crude, crude business Shhhh… And if we’re running dry we’ll do as before We’ll find the right way to annexe through war And point the finger at your human rights Although we’re well aware that makes us all hypocrites We’re anti-this and we’re anti-that We preferred Sharon over Arafat In the eternal dispute over precious soil Cos who’s ever heard of Palestinian oil? Shhhh…It’s a crude, crude business Shhhh…It’s a crude, crude business Shhhh… There’s always method where we intervene Because Saudi’s full and Yemen is clean So it pays occasionally to turn a blind eye As long as it don’t interrupt our supply This is the way we make us great again With Dubya, Trump and Holy Jesus “amen” The way to look big is to make them look small It’s just common sense don’t you know it y’all? Shhhh…It’s a crude, crude business Shhhh… Shhhh… Shhhh...

The Falling Man Rising at dawn, the night gives way to morning I leave my family sleeping Drive through the hush to the Windows On The World Where my life takes new meaning The view through the clouds to the sunrise beyond Makes me feel glad I’m alive But all will change as peace gives way to thunder Carried on wings of misguided disciples The earth beneath me shakes, the fire burns my eyes The path is blocked to survival I think back to those I love, those that care for me I hope they will see me again You’ve taken my future in your self-sacrifice A son lost their father through your cowardice You’ll never take my soul Everything slows, air rushing by Thoughts colliding so amplified Faces go through me, memories fly past The light comes for me intensified now When you look up and admire the red sunset Know that I’ll always be near And remember the falling man.

The Greatest Freedom Prove yourself, show what you can do Push yourself, make us proud of you Arm yourself for country and your Queen Immerse yourself into the war machine I thought the day would never come When I’d fly to the burning sun A chance to rise and blood my foe For this young boy, a chance to grow Hide yourself from gunfire and from shells Save yourself from this burning hell Hold yourself keep your mind aware Help yourself say a little prayer As God will keep your soul alive Because He fights upon our side If you should fall in His name The greatest freedom’s yours to claim Push yourself Arm yourself Save yourself Just arrived in Helmand Province Dust as far as eyes can see No place for an army novice To get a dose of reality My role in today’s patrol Is to stay alive amongst this debris Keep a watch out for hidden danger Or lose myself to an IED We travel to the local town To train the national army for free I have to say it makes me nervous As some have turned their guns on me My role in today’s patrol Is to stay alive there’s no guarantee Keep a watch out for hidden danger Eyes peeled for an IED My role in today’s patrol Is to be on prime time on the BBC To show the world the hidden danger A victim of an IED Through the smoky haze I see This horror show staring back at me Seems I can fly above the sand And then I begin to understand The greatest freedom you’ll ever perceive Is when you’ve gained wisdom and you learn to receive The highest mountain that you’ll ever climb Is learning to love behind enemy lines For years it’s been said, so it must be true The greatest freedom is coming to you. Today the plane touched down to earth In the land of my place of birth A slow-paced drive through Wiltshire streets The Union Standard draped in pleats The greatest freedom you’ll ever perceive Is when you’ve gained wisdom and you learn to receive The highest mountain that you’ll ever climb Is learning to love behind enemy lines For years it’s been said, so it must be true The greatest freedom is coming to you. The greatest freedom it’s often said Will come to us all when all else is dead

about

"The greatest freedom, it's often said, will come to us all when all else is dead"

The War Is Never Won examines the motivations for, and effects of, military conflict from WWI to modern day involvement in Afghanistan, asking the question "Will the human race ever realise nothing is obtained through discrimination and force, only lost".

Recorded at La Villa Strangiato between October 2018 and January 2020.
